Outdoor lunches in the charmingly secluded plaza and cherished breakfasts inside the sunlit dining room turn The Daily Grind into a daydream.
The downtown cafe’s adage is “Good Food From Good People.” Step through the door and owner Nancy Rogers and her husband are there everyday greeting customers with warm smiles and adding their own artful touches to the made-from-scratch menu.
The Daily Grind stakes their reputation on flaky blueberry and raspberry scones that melt in your mouth, buttery and sweet with the still juicy fresh berries. But the other pastries hold up just as well – doughy pecan sticky buns and homemade gingerbread cookies, just to name a few.
A fresh cup of coffee or latte is just the thing to sip as you sit in the small storefront dining room, adorned with white patio furniture, painted green walls and larger than life red poppies. Diners feel somewhat like they’re sitting in their downtown loft enjoying the view and slightly as if they were a desirable gift on display in the window.
The daily lunch specials are indeed special. There are choices like fluffy quiche lorraine or turkey panini sandwiches with fresh baby green salad.
Then there’s the mesquite chicken foldover. This is a juicy chicken breast with American cheese, sour cream, guacamole and sliced apples, all folded into a soft flour tortilla. I opted to substitute the accompanying mixed green salad for a bowl of the soup du jour when I saw what it was – sweet potato green chile.
Thick sweet potato puree with sweet corn kernels and a bite of green chile make this soup the kind of good that makes you close your eyes and take in a slow breath as the first spoonful slides down your throat.
